Managing Principal

MARKET/PRACTICE/DISCIPLINE/SECTOR: Buildings 

Job Summary

The Managing Principal is primarily responsible for the overall leadership and performance of their local office. This position will report to the Sector Leader and be a key member of the leadership team driving strategy, growth, and delivery. The Managing Principal will act as a steward of our company’s culture and Strategic Plan, including the firm’s vision, mission, and core values, and provide leadership for business development, project delivery, and operations within the office. 

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Responsible for growth of the building team within the assigned office, in collaboration with the Market Leaders and Discipline Leaders. Assist Market Leaders with sales and top-line growth through opportunity tracking, development, and capture. Responsible for (in coordination with Corporate HR) the recruitment, leadership, and development of a team of project management/delivery and technical professionals specific to an office. Plan for and direct business line management within the office, providing operational, project delivery, and design/technical leadership, including project management and delivery, technical excellence, client satisfaction, quality, and resource allocation. Responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of employees and the projects and programs managed. 

Business Development

Provide Market and Discipline Leaders support in developing sales, preparing business development forecasts and opportunity tracking. Effectively assign business development resources to achieve wins with appropriate returns on investment. Lead a professional environment for a creative enterprise, built on design and delivery excellence. Maintain active market and key client engagement, understanding client needs and expectations that will result in repeat business opportunities. Provide marketing and business development support and intelligence, developing effective capture plans, proposals, and bids to procure work. Actively participate in professional associations related to the business unit and practice areas of specialization, staying at the forefront of the professional and technical standards. Serve as a champion of advancing our company’s presence in the region and developing and recruiting employees. Support and collaborate with other Sectors within to grow the top-line and gain market share. 

Project Delivery

Assist Markets and Disciplines with project delivery and client service: project staffing, workload balancing and technical work, in accordance with client expectations and contract scope of work and budget, while adhering to professional, quality, safety, and legislative standards. Assist Operational Leadership with effective project reviews, quality assurance/control and compliance. Act as an advisor to clients and an advisor to the project team on client expectations, project delivery, design/technical practice. Serve as top advisor on projects of large scope and complexity. 

People & Operations

Driven by our Employer of Choice strategies and tactics, foster a safe and healthy local culture, while maintaining the integrity of the overarching firmwide principals that connect employees across Disciplines, Markets, Sectors and geographies. Work in tandem with the Sector Leader to ensure alignment of firmwide initiatives. Coordinate Sector Leadership on lease management and office utilization. Initiate and maintain extensive contacts with Practice and Discipline Leaders and Technical/Subject Matter Experts within the firm. Share responsibilities with Market and Discipline Leaders in the development, management, deployment, retention, and engagement of talent. Build high-performing, collaborative teams who demonstrate a collaborative and boundaryless approach to Design, dedicated focus on clients, a commitment to excellence and innovation, and a supportive working environment.   

Skills & Proficiencies

  • Ability to coach and mentor cross discipline (architecture, engineering, interior design)
  • Ability to lead a group and be the local point of contact for team building and project delivery

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver positive outcomes on projects
  • Proven record of developing new clients
  • Ability to discern new markets and develop business in those areas 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 15+ years of experience, including five years in a practice or operational leadership role
  • Professional licensure
  • Member of Professional or Technical Society 

Travel

  • Some travel may be required

Resulting Physical Qualifications

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to operate and manipulate standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to occasionally reach, bend, climb and/or balance.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
